"A curious symbol or letter in gold. It was neither Arabic or Chinese, nor as I found afterwards did it belong to any human script"

The Yellow Sign by Robert W. Chambers

This Purple velvet teardrop shaped Fez-o-Chapeau variant of our latest horror themed design inspired from classic literature is now available to order just in time for the '23-'24 Carcosa theatre season!

The Yellow Sign is one of the more requested design concepts we have received over the years and Robert W. Chambers' 1895 collection of short stories was a big influence on H. P. Lovecraft and by extension a big influence on Mythos fans, so it was only a matter of time before we eventually made this maddening chapeau.

We based our interpretation of the Yellow Sign on the symbol created by artist Christian Knutsson for Pelgrane Press and released into the public domain in 2020 for the benefit of all fans of Cosmic Horror. It best captures the spirit of the vague description from the short story and we love what they chose to do for the community.

You have found the Yellow Sign!

  • Important: As the chapeau style fits higher on one's head, the sizing is different than that of our fezzes. Men tend to wear them lower and should go with the larger size. Some women prefer to wear them with hairpins or clips and can option for the smaller size.
  • Please double-check your size before ordering.

Sizing

Finding Your Fez Size

Our hat sizes are slightly different than what you may have come across in the past. We don't use the traditional hat size: (head circumference divided by Pi) that many traditional milliners use for two reasons.

  • Firstly, our fezzes and chapeaus are cut and sewn from soft materials, not made from felt stretched over a shape block and then hardened. So our sizes come from our patterns not from a 3d form or industrial press.
  • Secondly, could they have come up with a more needlessly complex way to designate sizes than dividing by Pi? ...in fractions!?!

Anyway we simply use your head circumference rounded up to the nearest half inch.

The best way to measure for one of our fezzes is to wrap a tape measure around the head just barely above the ears and right across the forehead. It should be above the eyebrows. If you have a convex forehead measure the fullest part.
To be sure that you don't pull the tape measure too tight I recommend slipping a finger or two underneath the tape against the temple. Both fingers should touch the temple. Do not stack them. Then you can pull the tape snug and still ensure you have room for blood to flow to the brain.
If you pinch the end of the tape between your thumb and the fingers underneath the tape, you can hold the tape tight with one hand and slide it up off the head. This is how one can measure their own head without assistance.
Once you have the accurate measurement round UP to the nearest half inch. This simplified measurement will be your fez size. For example if your accurate measurement was 23 7/8 your simplified fez measurement would be 24". Use this measurement to find your fez or chapeau size.
Speaking of Chapeau Size, while the fez should fit squarely around the head just slightly above the ears, our glengarry inspired Chapeau is designed to fit high on top of the head, riding an inch or more above the ears. This is a different fit than most of the hats you have likely worn in the past and if this concept gives you pause I would suggest starting with fez and working your way up to a chapeau.

Tall vs Low Fezzes

We offer two main styles of fezzes, the more formal Tall Fez and the more casual Low Fez. In the beginning we made just the original 5.25" tall fez but I quickly discovered that it would clip the door frame as I got into and out of my car and would often drag against the headliner while driving. So to remedy this I created the "low fez" basically shortening the fez until it touched the top of my head. Low Fezzes are a good place to start your fez wearing if you don't have any experience wearing tall hats. The Tall Fez makes more of a statement and is the sort of thing I prefer to dress up to. It has that formal look seen in classic movies from a time when people dressed up for dinner and didn't wear short pants to the theater. There is a mysterious third style "Venti Fez" but it is rarely seen in polite company.

Chapeaux

The Fez-o-Chapeau is a unisex hat loosely inspired by the Scottish glengarry  cap, which is why it tends to be popular with the kilt-sporting crowd. We don't offer as many sizes of chapeaux as we do fezzes, and the size range is different so be sure to double-check your measurement before ordering. Guys tend to want to wear them lower on the head so if you are on the cusp between sizes you may want to go with the bigger size. Ladies might want to go smaller as many choose to wear them "pin-up" style and use a hair clip or bobby pin higher up on top of their head. The actual shape of one's head also plays into the fit of the Chapeau, while narrow heads will find the chapeau fits easily, wide heads may be uncomfortable with the amount of side-scalp exposed. This really comes down to personal preference.

We can also go ‘outside’ the norm when it comes to making either end of the fez scale – from 20.5" to 26.5".  However, these can only be done for designs that are currently in production or private custom orders, and we do need a tad bit of lead time.  Send us an email and we’ll see what we can do.

Tassels and Vents

Each fez or chapeau comes with one 6 inch tassel included, the option to purchase a second tassel if desired, and extra tassels can be purchased separately on their own. Tassels are easily removed and replaced. We recommend removing tassels before cleaning your fez. Tassels are susceptible to high humidity and have very poor defenses when attacked by cats.

Optional Fez Vents

Need to let off a little steam? Optional mesh vents can be added to the top of your fez at the time of purchase. Vents are sold in pairs, so buying 2 sets will get you 4 vents on the fez (chapeaus can only fit one pair of vents). Vents come in 3 finishes and we will install the one that matches the tassel grommet already installed on the fez. Vents cannot be removed and any hat customized with vents will not be eligible for a full refund if returned.

Shipping

Our fezzes can be shipped either :

  • Domestic USPS Priority flat-pack - Single Fez orders can be folded and packed into a small box. The fez will need some time to relax and perhaps a light steaming before wearing.
  • UPS - one or more fezzes can be stacked and shipped in a single box, arriving ready to wear.

All shipments from Fez-o-rama are sent with a signature required for delivery.  There are porch pirates in the world that have on occasion absconded with our shipping llamas (and their shipments of fezzes) in transit - the signature on delivery helps prevent that from occurring.

    Please note:
VAT/Customs/Duty/Import fees may apply – those we know of include: UK, Austria, Thailand, and Germany. Your Customs House/Post will either send out a note, or hold the fez shipment until you’re contacted.

Read this if you are NOT in the USA – it’s really important!  *seriously*

Here’s what’s going on for those of you in certain countries with Import duties and VAT.

When we ship internationally there’s a form that gets filled out that shows what the items are in the order and how much an ‘average’ price for that item is.  I can tell you that one fez is over that amount for packages going to the UK.

When the package gets to your country, your customs house will look at that form and if the amount is above ‘some’ amount they’ve decided on – it varies by country - you’ll be sent a notice for a VAT/Import tax due.  This may delay your order from being delivered.

What does this mean if you’ve ordered Expedited shipping – this means that your package will get into the country very quickly, and straight into the arms of your Customs house. We have no control of what happens at this point. If the package gets delayed for a long period of time we can open an inquiry through our Post, but we suggest the first step for you would be to contact your local post delivery person.

A little bit more on VAT/Import duties:

The recipient (buyer) is the importer of record and must comply with all laws and regulations of their local government. Orders shipped may be subject to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the local Country. The recipient of an international shipment may be subject to such import taxes, customs duties and fees, which are levied once a shipment reaches the recipient's Country. Additional charges for customs clearance must be fulfilled by the recipient. Fez-o-rama has no control over these charges.

We also encourage shipping multiple fezzes in one package – that way you and your friends can split the VAT charge.

If you have any questions on International shipping, please write us!

    Care and Feeding

We recommend hand washing with Woolite or similar (first remove the tassel) and then air drying the fez.

Ideally you want to shape it back into its fez form and prop it up so the bottom edge isn’t being crushed and air can flow. A tall can or jar can often do the trick.

We have had friends run a fez through the delicate cycle in a machine but you will ultimately shorten the lifespan of the fez. You definitely want to avoid the dryer. That is where the real damage can happen with the heat and abrasion.

    DO NOT DRYCLEAN

Our fezzes can be folded for travel with little fuss. Just give them a little time to breath after removing from your luggage and they should pop back into shape. If any wrinkles persist, a light steaming will take care of the problem.

Simply hold the fez above a kettle and lightly brush the velvet with your hand or a soft bristle brush. Once steamed let the fez rest and make yourself a nice cup of tea.
