This is one of those designs I had been contemplating doing for a long time. They say that even glimpsing his visage is enough to drive a man insane, what would spending hours designing an embroidery do to me? Then I remembered that I’m the guy that thought hand-making “Fine Embroidered Velvet Fezzes” was a reasonable business venture and I realized that no one would notice much difference.
Cthulhu was created by beloved horror writer H. P. Lovecraft in 1926. By the 1940′s Lovecraft’s mythos had grown a cult following and today Lovecraftian influences can be seen in all areas of the arts. There is even a H. P. Lovecraft film festival in Portland Oregon this week.
Needless to say, I felt I had to do the big guy justice and this design is a doozy. I went through many sketches and revisions, days of thoughtful contemplation and many nights of tossing and turning. This is one of the most complex designs we have done, even surpassing the Clockwork Fez by over 6,500 stitches and taking nearly an hour to run and I’m not likely done yet. This is just the prototype. There might still be more changes before I go into production. The first version of the sketch was pretty straight forward but it just didn’t have the hook I was looking for. I decided to draw from the era Cthulhu was created in and introduce some art nouveau flourishes and double the number of feelers coming from his face. This really pulled it all together for me. I am really excited to be able to present this new design.
