Hellboy™

We’re always working on new fez designs and the last few months have been fairly eventful on that front. Back in February we premiered the Hellboy™ Fez with Mike Mignola. This is a Special Numbered Edition of 100 fezzes and we are already coming up on the end of the run. It’s not too late to get yours but considering the number of Cans we have coming up I’m not sure how long these will be around.

Mighty Ganesha adorns this ornate fez! I sketched this one out in my book back in January and just didn’t find the time to get it together until 3 months later.

This special variant of our popular Cthulhu fez debuted at the Emerald City Comic Con and has finally found its way to the website. This is a limited run due to the unique fabric.

Road Trip!

We’re getting into the heart of Con season and we’re hitting the road this month as we have a pair of shows in short order. We’re loading up the car and taking a multi state tour to:

May 23-26 We’re heading back to the land of heat and sun for one of the greatest shows we’ve ever been to.

This year looks even bigger and we can’t wait! As part of the weekend I will be taking part in my first panel as I join Alvin Ong and Daniel Davis to discuss ins and outs of launching your indie arts career. Look for the Indie Artist Bootcamp panel on Friday May 24th at 4:30pm.

After we pack up from PhxCC we’re taking a leisurely  to the Grand Canyon on our way to:

Denver Comic Con

May 31 – June 2  It’s our 2nd time in the Mile High City and this year looks to be even better than the great time we had at the debut show last year. We’re bringing a lot more fezzes than we had last year and we are bringing a really cool numbered exclusive as well.

Other Fez-o-stuff

On top of the fezzes we have been all sorts of busy around here. We’ve been working on a number of new elements for the Fez-o-booth that we will be debuting at Phoenix Comicon and continuing to develop throughout the con season.

Work continues on the “new” website. We were getting pretty close having a launch but we hit a snag when it comes to product ordering and inventory. The goal is to streamline the ordering process but we have yet to find a cart system that supports our needs, which seems kind of odd considering we aren’t doing anything that would seen to be difficult. If anyone knows a PHP coder interested in working on a fez project let us know.

Our first stop: The Phoenix Comicon

May 23rd-26th, 2013 Memorial Day Weekend at the Phoenix Convention Center. This will be our second time exhibiting at PhxCC and last year was such a great time we can’t wait to get back there.

We’ll be right in the heart of the action in booth #796 and we’re bringing the latest version of the notorious Fez-o-booth as well as all sorts of fezzes from our latest designs as well as some of the classics.

Phoenix is a huge show with lots to do and see. I can’t recommend this one enough. Let us know if you are planning to attend and be sure to stop by the booth and say hi. I’ll once again be live sketching on fez boxes, posting photos with fellow Fez Heads and generally mucking about.

On top of our usual show shenanigans, we’re doing a panel!

 On Friday May 24th at 4:30pm in room 124A Alvin Ong (Furry Feline Creatives) Daniel m. Davis (Steam Crow) and myself, will be discussing how to start, grow, and nurture your talent into an indy art business. Learn some of the secrets of getting started from some incredibly experienced creators …and a guy that makes weird hats.

We’ll be covering such getting-started topics as: balancing life and work, getting the word out, and commanding an unholy robot army of destruction. The last 15 min will be dedicated to Q & A …assuming we don’t degrade into an impromptu bawdy puppet show by the 35min mark.

After the con, Maya and I will be packing our car back up and heading towards our next show in Denver, but on the way we plan to stop by the Grand Canyon and post many photos from the road. So keep an eye on the social medias!

A special color variant of our classic Cthulhu Fez!

Long time followers may recognize this fabric from the Fez of the Week #2, it has long been discontinued but I was lucky enough to stumble across some on one of my many fabric safaris. Sadly, we are getting to the end of our stash on this but not before I got to make this classy take on ol’ tentacle face.

A sepia toned Cthulhu stares ominously out from this rare leather embossed, maroon velvet, low-profile fez!

Now, unlike our numbered limited editions, we’re going to keep hand cutting these until this particular velvet runs out. I’m estimating that we will be able to do around 50 or so of them. Considering the shows we have lined up this month, that may not last very long. We did debut a small batch of these at Emerald City Comic Con and brought them to Wondercon last month, so a good number of them have already been claimed. We will be making more over the weekend so if you size is sold out be sure to check back. We will update the count as long as we can.

Mighty Ganesha, Lord of Success and Destroyer of Obstacles finally gets his own fez!

This is one of those designs that had been in my mind for a long time. I have always loved the symbolism of Ganesha (or Ganesh) and not just because he rode around on the back of a rodent. Back on January I posted a sketch I had done during a particularly slow day. As is usually the case for my ideas, it sat percolating in the back of my head until I gave myself an April deadline. Instead of making this one a Fez of the Week, we went right into production as we have a number of shows coming up and I would like this guy to be present at each.

Worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth, Ganesha is just the thing to wear when you have some serious obstacles to knock down with the mighty power of KNOWLEDGE! We’ve taken the concept of a thinking cap and raised it to a whole new realm.

On the back you find Mushika, Ganesha’s personal conveyance and reminder that you need to ride your desires and not let them ride you.

To commemorate my 43th lap around that great big burning ball of gasses we call the sun, I have decided to bring back my favorite time/space conveyance themed fez for a limited run.

Protect yourself from Blorgons and Circuit-chaps with this dashing representation of the Inspector’s Booth the D.A.R.S.I.T. It may seem small on the outside but it is just as small on the inside… as you would expect. The Inspector’s fez is pictured here with a grey tassel but you can choose whatever tassel color you prefer. Go ahead, we won’t judge… seriously get the grey one.

Alright, you people put me up to this and I can’t resist a monkey wearing a silly hat on a silly hat.

I wasn’t actually planning to post another Fez of the Week this month, and certainly had no plan to post a second one this week, but after the overwhelming demand I received after an offhanded remark I made on Twitter, I decided that I needed to rise to the challenge.

The Monkey Pope is embroidered on our vibrant purple velvet and features what may be the best monkey face I have done so far.

Any resemblance to any church officials (monkey or otherwise) is purely in your own imagination and I would like to apologize in advance to any Pope, past or present that might be offended. I would also like to apologize to any atheist monkeys out there that might object to this as well, but I am still not entirely sure how you got to my blog in the first place.

This is a Fez of the Week and as such, will only be available as a pre-order for one week. After that we will close the edition and go into production. So if this is your cup of tea, place your order now. After that we are moving on to something else.

That is until Lar notifies me that I need to take a look at his new avatar. Turns out he had come up with a bacon themed design worthy of being featured on a fez.

I would have dropped everything and immediately attacked this project but we were in the middle of launching the Hellboy fez and preparing for the Emerald City Comic Con. Now that we have recovered from both of these endeavors I finally have a chance to do another Fez of the Week and this one is bacon themed!

Fez of the Week #102 features the artwork of Lar deSouza, cartoonist, illustrator and fez aficionado. Lar is the man behind such web comics as Looking for Group and Least I Could Do and the illustrator behind our limited edition Richard Fez. This Fez of the Week will only be available for pre-sale for one week. Once we go into production orders will be closed and fezzes will be made on a first ordered first produced basis.

Time for another Special Edition fez!

Once again We have done a design collaboration with one of our favorite artists and boy is it a doozy!

Two years ago I had the pleasure of working up a special design for writer and artist Mike Mignola. This time I got to work with one of his most popular creations, Hellboy™.

Mike is currently in the midst of the critically acclaimed Hellboy in Hell series and this design takes its inspiration directly from one of the panels in issue #1. If you haven’t been following the story do yourself a favor and get to a comic book store… or better yet get yourself to Seattle this weekend for the Emerald City Comic Con and meet Mr. Mignola in person; and while you are there you can get your hands on one of the first 25 of 100 of this special fez at our booth!

While No.1-25 of 100 are on their way to Rain City we will be opening up a pre-sale for the next batch of these big guys and as an extra bonus they will be at a special price during the pre-order to make up for the wait. Production will begin after we return from the road and will be done on a first ordered basis so don’t delay.

Each of these limited edition fezzes comes with a numbered edition pin and each fez features Mike Mignola’s signature subtly engraved in the velvet on the back.

This coming week a bunch of creative nerd types will assemble in Florida to board a floating hotel so they can act out in front of bitter entitled old people. I may not be selling it correctly but it sounds like a damn good time to me. Anyhow, in honor of this annual bacchanalia we created not one but two new designs!

Fez of the Week #101 The Sea Monkey Fez

First up is The Sea Monkey Fez designed specifically for the passengers on the JoCo Cruise Crazy Caribbean cruise. They have taken to calling themselves Sea monkeys and are known to don fezzes, formal dress and moustaches. Hey I am in no position to judge here, but once again, sounds like a damn good time to me.

Fez of the Week #102 The Monkey Roger

Next we have the Monkey Roger Fez. Truth be told once I drew the gorilla skull and cutlasses on the Sea Monkey’s hat I knew I was in trouble. So instead of waiting for the requests I decided to just go ahead and make a second fez design. This one is a low profile fez and is perfect for more casual fez scenarios, shuffleboard courts and general gooning. Get a pair for your goomba bookends before your next court appearance.

Now typically our Fez of the Week designs are only available for a week, hence the name, but in this case we’ve decided to let it ride while we focus our attention on prepping for upcoming shows. So if you haven’t ordered your Sea Monkey or Monkey Roger don’t fret, you still have a little time. The next batch will be made on the 7th of February.

The D20-13 Redux Limited Edition Fez

Way back in December we released a limited edition variant on our classic D20 fez as Fez #100. We got such a great response that we decided to roll up another limited edition fez to bring to the shows.

Now we’re only making 20 of these and I don’t know if they will last until our next show. They are already made and ready to ship, so if rolling 13s is your thing you better move fast. Once these go we will be moving on to something else. We held back 3 of them just in case one of the sizes sells out quick so look for the back-order option.

The Table Top Gamer Fez

This is a design that I have been wanting to do for some time and now finally I got around to it. A fez for all of the old-school table top gamers out there.

At least partly inspired by Wil Wheaton’s fantastic TableTop show this design has been sitting in my sketchbook for nearly a year. I thought about releasing it as a Fez of the Week but was so enamored with it that we put it right into production.

We only have 13 made at the moment but we will be producing more so we can take this one to some of the shows we have lined up in 2013.

Emerald City Comic Con March 1-3 in Seattle Washington

Next month we will be making our first appearance in the Great North West as we jump a plane to Seattle for the ECCC. We are extremely excited about this show. I love Seattle and we are there at least once a year to visit family, so you can imagine how buzzed we are about bringing out obsession for show and tell. I got to check the show out last year as a guest and I simply can’t wait to return. Tickets are available now and rumor is the 3-day passes are close to selling out.

Then on March 29th: WonderCon at the Anaheim Convention Center.

A new website is in the works!

I can’t believe we have been using this website for nearly 4 years. The current site has served us well but there are a few things that I would like to incorporate and since we had a major update coming for the system we figured it was a good time to see what else might be out there. So the plan is to migrate the current Zencart system over to a PrestaShop. PrestaShop looks to support some of the features we have been looking for and we like working with open source systems.

Our hope is to make the website a bit more convenient for you to use with better browsing of designs and a nicer shopping experience. We had hoped to make the change over the holidays but there is one thing we need to solve first. We are in need of a custom coded module to handle fez options in a more streamlined way.

If a code monkey out there has some PrestaShop or PHP coding experience and is interested in giving us a hand let me know. Normally we take a swing at this sort of thing but I already have too much to do with the fez mongering. There could even be a special fez in it for you.

Speaking of Code Monkeys, Marv is a little disappointed that no one out there has cracked the message hidden on his fez.
