Our obsession with skulls goes multi-cultural!

Last year’s experimental Sugar Skull fez design returns in a new white on black production run!

Our Dia De Los Muertos themed design is back by popular demand. The Calavera Fez features our inverted South of the Border Sugar Skull design on a classy Low Profile black velvet fez. It’s the perfect fez for ancestral worship, celebrating those that came before us or have moved on ahead of their time… or while drinking taquila, not that those are mutually exclusive activities… not by a long shot.

The Sugar Skull design was first created for last year’s Tiki Oasis theme, South of the Border and we even did a very limited edition of 13 fezzes featuring multi-color UV reactive threads in an inverted design. Well we’ve brought back the inverted style, this time in a much more stable white thread. We have put these right into production and will be bringing a bunch of them to Phoenix Comicon this month but you don’t need to wait until the 24th, they are ready to go right now!

We got a number of great shots and it is becoming clear that choosing a weekly favorite is going to start getting very difficult. A number of you went with some great theme shots with reading (something I support wholeheartedly!) but my favorite is one that actually references the date.

To make this challenge a little more interesting we will be choosing our favorite photo for each week and when all is said and done the selected photos will be entered into a second chance drawing. So improve your chances of winning and get creative with your photos!

There is still plenty of time to enter! Simply take a photo on one of the Fridays and post it to your Twitter feed with the hashtag #FezFriday. You can include “Fez-o-rama” or mention @fezmonger to make sure I see it but it is not required. Photos must be taken and posted on the same Friday and only counts as an entry for the person that posted it. That is why you see the groovy tandem shots of @Kimmjah and @charliemoore.

We especially liked his use of color and depth, and the dual vices contrast nicely with the pocket full of pens. This is a man ready to multitask in style! Tark is our first entry in the second chance drawing.

The Winged Monkey Fez debuts!

Our newest fez features an original design inspired by the works of L. Frank Baum. I was first inspired to make a flying monkey themed fez while sitting in an airport waiting for a flight. After some time and a few concepts I think I finally have my official travel fez. These are up on the site now and ready for shipping.

Last Call for “Leather”!

To make room for new designs we have to say goodbye to some past styles. Sometimes a style has to go away simply because we run out of a special fabric, and sometime, just sometimes, we find just enough of that fabric to make a few more. After scouring our fabric boxes we managed to make five more of the “Leather” edition of the Clockwork Fez. We only have a few select sizes left and they won’t last long so act quickly.

Speaking of running out of time, these are the fezzes that are currently in our Last Call section of our website. If you see something you had hoped to get your hands on you better act quickly. There are only a few of these left for sale, we are already out of some sizes, and once the remaining go these styles will be retired!

Fez Friday Photo challenge returns!

To keep us entertained while we toil away on fezzes, we are once again having a Fez Friday giveaway for the next five weeks. Check out last week’s post for details on how you can participate and win.

Fez Fridays are still going strong on the Twitter so it may be time to start another give-away! For the next 5 Fridays, culminating on Memorial Day Weekend, we will collect all of eligible Fez Friday photos and from that pile we will randomly draw a winner. As an added challenge we will select our favorite photo from each week and those five photos will be put in a separate random drawing with much better odds! Now just to make sure we spread the love around each participant is only eligible to win one prize so if the overall random winner happens to be one of the weekly favorites we will pick a runner-up for their slot in the second drawing.

This month’s prize will be a special Fez Friday fez stand to put your favorite fez on display… you know, when it isn’t locked to your skull. I would post a photo of what the fez stand will look like but I honestly don’t know yet. I’m still playing with ideas.

How many monkey themed fezzes is too many? I’ll let you know when we get there… assuming I even notice.

That’s right, our monkey obsession continues with our latest fez and this one is a doozy.

We are thrilled to present the Winged Monkey Fez!

Now some of you may remember way back at #59 I had done a flying monkey themed fez after spending too much time in an airport. That one went to my Wizard of Oz loving mother-in-law and while I had a few requests to make more of them I was never quite satisfied with the design.

See, my process tends to go something like this:

1. come up with a new idea
2. make a prototype
3. become hypercritical of my own work
4. dwell on the design for extended periods of time
5. throw everything out and start over
6. finally get something closer to what I had in mind when I first started way back in step 1.

If only I could skip the first five steps.

So back to the sketch pad I went with the intention of designing a winged monkey that captured the dark mischief of the creatures in L Frank Baum’s books. Something that would also evoke the regal emblems of  the flying corps of the past. For inspiration I looked at the work of W.W. Denslow from the 1900 edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Looking at these beautiful plates I immediately knew I wanted to render this monkey in shades of blue. The little touch of red is a nod to the fans of the movie and the costumes designed by Adrian Greenburg.

This is one of the largest embroideries I have created for our fezzes and I am so pleased with how it came out I went ahead and made a small batch of them in hopes that some of you might also be interested in one. So whoever places the first order gets to lay claim to the official Fez of the Week and it’s numbered pin.

Our Latest Fezzes!

The D12 Fez WC Edition

March brought our latest Gamer’s Fez and this one is a Special Limited Edition! Only 20 limited edition fezzes were made and each one comes with a numbered edition pin. Since these are spread out over 7 different sizes they are bound to go quickly. Some sizes are already gone.

The Skull & Bones on Black

Our classic Skull & Bones returns on black velvet. It was one of the first fez designs I came up with and I just can’t get away from it.

The Steam Crow Fez!

The next fez in our guest artist series is a collaboration with Daniel Davis of Steam Crow and is our first fez to feature this deep brown velvet!

This design is limited to 100 fezzes and each will come with a custom numbered edition pin. Pre-orders are available now. Production will begin in the next week or so!

The Tribal Skull Tassel Leash

Our newest addition to our growing line of tassel retention systems. This one features a 3/4” tribal skull hand sculpted by our friend Janelle Badali.

The DIY Fez Stand

A few weeks ago I posted this DIY project I have been working on so others could make their own versatile fez stand. All of the hardware was found on Amazon.com with a few bits cut from some lightweight plywood bought at Home Depot.

My goal was to create something that could be easily repeated by others and be suitable for many situations. I plan to make a bunch of these to use at our booth for our next public appearance.

This week’s fez is a preview of our next collaborative fez project and features the artwork of our friend and incredibly talented illustrator, Daniel Davis. Daniel and his lovely wife Dawna, are the talent behind Steam Crow and have published books, designed a prolific series of art prints and created all sorts of cool things for their shop. We are thrilled to be a small part of their creative endeavors.

What you see here is the prototype for a Limited Edition fez we will be launching in April. The Steam Crow fez features an original Steam Crow pumpkin and crossbones on a rich dark brown velvet Mark VI Tall fez. This one, along with two just like it, were given to the Steam Crow family to wear in their booth at WonderCon last week.
